Stachybotrys, explained plainly
When a caller says toxic black mold, they almost always mean Stachybotrys chartarum. This species feeds on cellulose, so paper drywall facing, ceiling tile and cardboard boxes are its favorite food, and it only gets going when they've been soaked for weeks. Active growth often looks wet and slick, almost tar-like. When the water stops, it dries into a sooty, powdery layer that breaks loose the moment something brushes against it.
Online photos make every dark stain look like Stachybotrys, but that's not how identification works. Cladosporium and other molds are just as dark, and a stain's color proves nothing. A tape-lift or a cut piece of material sent to an accredited lab gives the answer. Stachybotrys can produce compounds called mycotoxins.
