Stachybotrys, explained plainly

Fresh colonies tend to look slimy and dark green to black. Once the source dries up, the growth goes dry and powdery, and that powdery stage sheds easily.
Online photos make every dark stain look like Stachybotrys, but that's not how identification works. Cladosporium and other molds are just as dark, and a stain's color proves nothing. A tape-lift or a cut piece of material sent to an accredited lab gives the answer. Stachybotrys can produce compounds called mycotoxins.
